Marketing a band isn't just about the music. A lot of money is made on band merchandise, as fans want to surround themselves with their favorite artist.

Some teenage bedrooms are shrines to the rock stars of the day. The walls are covered in posters, scrapbooks are full of signed photographs and ticket stubs and coffee is drunk from a mug bearing the faces of the chosen ones.

One of the first artists to be sold in such a way was the Beatles. Their images were everywhere, on lunch boxes, jigsaws and there were little action figures of them, playing their instruments.
Beatle wigs were popular too with the trademark floppy, fringe. This kind of memorabilia is sought after at conventions and other gatherings of fans. Their management was trying things out for the first time.
